ASEAN Common Visa

ASEAN Common Visa was first introduced by Indonesia in 2011 with the aim to accommodate foreigners who wish to travel across ASEAN by  allowing them to use only one visa in order to get through the ASEAN. Thailand and Cambodia have piloted the ASEAN Common Visa project in the Irrawaddy, the Chao Praya, and the Mae Khong river economic strategy cooperation which includes five countries along the rivers (Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) They are going to join ACMECS which is am important progress leading to ASEAN Common Visa.

The benefit of ASEAN Common Visa is the convenient in traveling especially for foreigners which will increase the flow of foreign currency to provoke tourists and economic industries in ASEAN.

Moreover foreign investors will be able to expand the investment into ASEAN which not only help to increase employment rate and circulate the capital in ASEAN but also help improving the quality of life and decreasing the social gap which is an serious problem found in ASEAN.

Strengths and Weaknesses of ASEAN members 

1. Singapore

  • Strength

*having highest average income per person per year in the ASEAN and is ranked number 15 of the world.
* having stable politic
* the center of international finance
*having skillful workers
*expert in human resource and business management
*the location supports the building of navigational center

  • Weakness

* Relying on the import of raw material and lacking of blue collar workers
* high business operation cost

  • Interesting point

* trying to expend the economic structure in to service sector in order to reduce the dependent on export

2. Indonesia

  • Strength

* having largest economy in ASEAN
*having a large market (the fourth highest number of population of the world and highest in ASEAN
*having world highest number of Muslim population
* plenty and variety of natural resources especially coal, petroleum, natural gas, and other metals
*strong bank system

  • Weakness

*locate on islands separately
*not well-improved basic public utility especially in the transportation and international connections

  • Interesting point

*most of the investment mainly uses the domestic resources

3. Malaysia

  • Strength

*ranked number 3 of the highest average income per person per year in ASEAN
*has stored up petroleum ranked number 3 of the Asia Pacific and ranked number 2 for natural gas store up
*complete basic structure
*skillful workers

  • Weakness

*small number of population which brings about the insufficient blue collar workers

  • Interesting point

*aim to be a developed country in year 2020
*having a serious policy to develop the high technology production

4.Brunei

  • Strength

*ranked number 3 of ASEAN and number 26 of the world in average income per person per year
*stable politic
*export petroleum and is ranked number 4 of petroleum store up in ASEAN

  • Weakness

*small market with population about 400,000 people
*insufficient workers

  • Interesting point

*has a close economic relationship with Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia
*mainly goods transportation relies on Singapore
*give much precedence on food stability

5. The Philippines

  • Strength

*twelfth highest population of the world (more than 1 million people)
*workers have knowledge and are able to speak English

  • Weakness

*locate far away from other ASEAN members
*not well-improved basic structure system and social welfare

  • Interesting point

*the labor union has much role and there is always increase labor wage protest
*most investment is mainly for domestic needs

6.Vietnam

  • Strength

*number of population is ranked number 14 of the world (about 90 million people)
*the second most store up petroleum in the Asia Pacific
*has a long coast longer than 3,200 kilometers
*stable politic
*the second lowest wage in ASEAN (following Cambodia)

  • Weakness

*non well-developed public utility
*high land and rent cost

*high income and needs because of fast economic growth

7.Cambodia

  • Strengths

*plenty and variety of fertile natural resources especially water, forest and mineral
*lowest wage in the ASEAN (1.6 USD/day)

  • Weakness

*not well-developed public utility
*high cost of public utility
*lack of skilled workers

  • Interesting point

*conflict between Thailand and Cambodia may reduce trade and investment

8.Laos

  • Strength

*abundance and variety of natural resources especially water and mineral
*stable politic
*low wage (2.06 USD/day)

  • Weakness

*not well-developed public utility
*mostly mountainous areas make the transportation, no sea exist

  • Interesting pointing

*most investment is in basic structure, hydropower and mine

9.Myanmar

  • Strength

*abundance of natural resources especially petroleum and natural gas
*area connect to China and India
*lot wage (2.5 USD/day)

  • Weakness

*not well-developed public utility
*not stable politics and policy

  • Interesting point

*highly developed transport system especially high speed train and port

10. Thailand

  • strength

*the base of industry and agricultural product
*the center of transportation
*equal excess to all public utility
*strong banking system
*many labor

* most of the labor don’t have enough skill
* most of industrial technology is in middle level

*plan to be the center of ASEAN community e.g. logistic and tourism
